As a Schwartz Fellow at New America, Louie Palu has documented the issues surrounding the drug war in Mexico as it relates to the United States covering issues such as organized crime, illegal drugs, immigration, poverty, corruption, impunity and violence. Mr. Palu is an award-winning documentary photographer who covered the war in Kandahar, Afghanistan between 2006-2010. He is also well known for his long-term studies of numerous social political issues including a 12-year project (1991-2003) on mining communities and on the prison in Guantanamo Bay (2007-ongoing). His work has been featured worldwide including on the BBC, NPR, Foreign Policy Magazine, The New Yorker, The New York Times, TIME, Newsweek, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, Forbes, National Post, The Economist, The Globe and Mail, Wall Street Journal, Paris Match, Lapham’s Quarterly, Sunday Times Magazine and many others. He is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design.
