Switching Channels

The night of September 9 appeared to fulfill all the promise
underlying NBC Universal's ambitious $2.7 billion acquisition in 2001
of Telemundo, the second-largest Spanish language television network in
the U.S. On that night, the NBC sibling carried President Obama's
important healthcare address to a joint session of Congress-on a slight
delay to allow for dubbing into Spanish-followed by its highest-rated
program ever, which reached more than 5 million viewers.

The New America Foundation today announced a fellowship

Leave Van Jones Alone

My guess is that Van Jones and Bob McDonnell aren't the closest of friends. One is an African-American activist from the progressive left, who's spent much of his adult life in inner-city Oakland fighting The Man; the other is a white middle-aged pro-life Catholic Republican, who has long represented The Man in the deep-red Sunbelt suburbs of Virginia. But I'd recommend that Jones and McDonnell get in touch.

Mac Is Back

This past week, the straight-talking John McCain the media knows and loves made a conspicuous comeback. On Face the Nation, McCain struck a decidedly post-partisan note, praising the late Senator Kennedy before sharply contradicting fellow Republican Dick Cheney on torture. After a punishing defeat at the hands of Barack Obama, McCain seems to have regained his stature and his reputation for independence. He's had more media exposure than any other leading Republican, certainly far more than John Kerry in 2005 or Al Gore in 2001.

The Age of Cronkite

As we mourn the loss of Walter Cronkite, perhaps the world's
most celebrated television journalist, we're also mourning the death of a
common culture. After a long and successful career as a print journalist, most
notably as a correspondent covering the final phase of the Second World War in
Europe and North Africa, he emerged as one of
the first of the television news stars, covering everything from national
political conventions to celebrity fluff. And as anchor of the CBS Evening
News, he set a pattern that would last for decades: the news anchor as

'Evil Madoff' -- If the Shoe Fits

Not since the aftermath of 9/11 has the word
"evil" been bandied about so much in the public media. Last week, while
sentencing Bernard Madoff to 150 years in prison, U.S. District Judge Denny
Chin brought the term back in a big way. Chin's characterization of Madoff's
crimes as "extraordinarily evil" was so striking that it made
headlines around the world. And, as usual whenever that loaded word is used,
there were plenty of people who were offended by it.
