Peter Bergen and Fareed Zakaria in the Weekly Standard | 'Win the War?'

New America in the News:

In the New Republic, Peter Bergen and Paul Cruickshank told the
story of Sheikh Salman al-Awdah, author of an open letter attacking bin
Laden and violent jihad that has caused shockwaves across the Muslim
world. The sheikhs of Anbar Province in Iraq lead a national,
transsectarian movement preparing for provincial elections by the end
of the year. Polling shows a widespread decline in support among
Muslims for suicide bombing and for bin Laden. Fareed Zakaria observed
that the number of Islamist attacks worldwide has declined
precipitously since 2004.

How did this happen? It is partly due to Muslim outrage at al Qaeda's killing of
its coreligionists. It is partly due to Muslim rejection of al Qaeda's malign
interpretation of Islam. For these reasons, Bergen and Cruickshank wrote that
"encoded in the DNA of apocalyptic jihadist groups like Al Qaeda are the
seeds of their own long-term destruction." LINK

Parag Khanna and Fareed Zakaria in Wired | 'The Post-National, Post-American World as a League of Regions'

New America in the News:

...Two new books – The Post-American World by Fareed Zakaria and The Second World by Parag Khanna – argue that the new global economy power will be more dispersed and multipolar.

"Mr. Zakaria believes we are experiencing modern history's third great power shift, after the rise of the West from the 15th century on, and the rise of the U.S. in the 19th century. But he argues that this latest transition is not so much about the decline of America as it is about “the rise of the rest,” and by that he means much more than simply China or India. The end result will be a “landscape that is quite different from the one we have lived in until now – one defined and directed from many places and by many peoples.” Mr. Khanna similarly predicts that we are headed toward a “global, multi-civilizational, multipolar” world with three superpowers: the U.S., China and the European Union.

"Each of the Big Three powers will assert its influence differently, but the intense demand for energy and resources means that the underlying goal will be the same. And the main battlefield for this geopolitical competition, Mr. Khanna argues, is the “second world” – about 40 strategically important “transition” states whose relationships with the superpowers have the capacity to tip the balance...LINK

Google Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt has been named to be the next chairman of the New America Foundation, which researches issues such as health care and education.

Schmidt will become chairman June 1, the foundation said Thursday in a statement. He succeeds James Fallows, a writer for the Atlantic Monthly magazine and former speechwriter for President Jimmy Carter.

Schmidt will help the organization as the endowment and staff grow, Steve Coll, the foundation's CEO, said in an interview. Other board members include Quadrangle Group principal Steven Rattner and Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International. more

The Arrogant Empire

The United States will soon be at war with Iraq. It would seem, on the face of it, a justifiable use of military force. Saddam Hussein runs one of the most tyrannical regimes in modern history.

For more than 25 years he has sought to acquire chemical, biological and nuclear weapons, and has, in several documented cases, succeeded. He gassed 60,000 of his own people in 1986 in Halabja. He has launched two catastrophic wars, sacrificing nearly a million Iraqis and killing or wounding more than a million Iranians. He has flouted 16 United Nations resolutions over 12 years that have… more
