The Troubled Economy | NBC's Meet the Press

ERIC SCHMIDT: The correct thing for the government to do is to come in with a fair amount of money to get the--get business going again. If you're going to do that, seems to me that you should get a twofer. The president-elect has talked about this. Let's use that money to fix some of the problems that we have in the country--roads, bridges, schools, access to broadband. And maybe we can work on energy policy... LINK to Transcript

Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget in NBC's First Read | 'Every Dime?'

Earlier, Obama said that he
will "make sure that we have a healthcare system that allows for
everyone to have basic coverage. I think those are pretty important
priorities. And I pay for every dime of them."

Take a look at these numbers from the
nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget on the spending plans for BOTH candidates.

-- $173 billion in 2009 for Iraq and Afghanistan (Congressional Budget Office)
-- $700 billion (projected) for Wall Street bailout
-- a net of $400 billion per year (roughly) for Obama tax and spending proposals (Cmte for a Responsible Federal Budget)
-- a net of $400 billion per year (roughly) for McCain tax and spending proposals (Cmte for a Responsible Federal Budget)

So for each presidential candidate, that comes to almost $1.3 trillion -- on top of everything else in the budget. LINK

Reihan Salam on NBC Nightly News | 'GOP Youth Look for New Approach to Republican Party'

MARIA MENOUNOS reporting:

Young Republican activists like Brian Smith say they are not
giving up the fight for young voters who thus far have been crucial to Barack
Obama's success.

Mr. BRIAN SMITH: What we find important--individual liberty,
national security, you know, limited government--are still going to be the
same, but the approach is going to be different.

MENOUNOS: Ross Douthat and Reihan Salam, both 28, agree, they're
among the youngest thinkers looking for that new approach to the grand old
party, saying the old Republican message doesn't work today.

Mr. REIHAN
SALAM: We can make government more responsive. We want you to have
ownership of government.

MENOUNOS: Looking to re-cast the GOP message in new terms, these
young Republicans want to secure the working class and pivotal new voters by
focusing on kitchen table issues like tax breaks for young families as opposed
to handouts, arguing government spending is OK as long as it's productive.

Mr. ROSS DOUTHAT: Conservative politicians have to readjust and
move to address the challenges facing America today.

Mr. SALAM: If the Republican Party doesn't wise up and start
talking about those issues that matter urgently now to young families, they're
going to be extinct. LINK to video

Navy to Shoot Down Spy Satellite (NBC Today Show)

In its coverage of U.S. plans to shoot down a rogue satellite, NBC Today interviews New America Foundation Expert Jeffrey Lewis.

"The Russians and the Chinese in particular really look at this launch as being an anti-satellite test, a weapon to shoot down satellites more than a mitigation measure designed to prevent human harm," said Lewis.

Lisa Margonelli Discusses Book "Oil on the Brain" on TODAY Show

LESTER HOLT, co-host: After a bit of a reprieve, gas prices may be going up again. Conflicts in Nigeria and Iran have crude oil prices on the rise, climbing above the $60 a barrel mark for the first time in more than a month. But before you complain, consider where the price of gas comes from. Author Lisa Margonelli traveled more than 100,000 miles to find out, and the journey is documented in her book "Oil On The Brain: Adventures From the Pump to the Pipeline."

And, Lisa, good morning. Thanks for being here.Ms. LISA MARGONELLI ("Oil On The Brain"): Good morning.HOLT: We're all dying to know where the price of gas comes from, but I'm also dying to know why you did this trip? I mean, journey or obsession?Ms. MARGONELLI: Obsession. Both, actually. I was--I started hanging out at a local gas station and just--I really wanted to get close to the people and the machines and the economies that make our lifestyle possible. So I started at the gas station, hung out all along the way with truckers, at the refinery, on a drilling rig in Texas, and then… more

'Meet the Press' Cites Joel Kotkin's Schwarzenegger Op-Ed

On the Nov. 26 edition of NBC's "Meet the Press," host Tim Russert used a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed by New America 's Joel Kotkin to emphasize the independent appeal of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R).

Russert quoted extensively from the article, which can be read in its entirety here. A brief excerpt of the Russert-Schwarzenegger interview transcript is included below, while a video clip can be viewed at right. For the full interview, please see the "Meet the Press" website.

MR. RUSSERT: Joel Kotkin in The Wall Street Journal did a little analysis of your race, and this is what he concluded: “Amidst the Republican rout, some important political lessons can be drawn from the results in California. Oft dismissed by conservatives as ‘the left coast’ and written off as hopelessly blue, the state election revealed some critical trends that may prove decisive -- for both parties -- in 2008 and beyond.

“Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 17-point victory alone commands some attention, since it is easily the most impressive score by any Republican in a Democratic-leaning state this year - and it suggests a future for pro-environment, pro-business, fiscally conservative and socially moderate politics. ...

“The key to Mr.… more
