State Climate Policy Tracker/State Climate Action Matrix
State Climate Policy Tracker
In conjunction with a state's GHG reduction targets, the development of a comprehensive Climate Action Plan is essential to any state or municipalities efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Once GHG emissions targets are set, a Climate Action Plan can provide the roadmap or guide to achieving those targets. A comprehensive climate action plan may have several recommendations based on the composition of a state's emissions. There are currently 33 U.S. states that have completed or are in the process of completing a climate action plan. The Climate Policy Program has been tracking the implemenation of completed plans to ensure that actions listed in the plan are actually being taken. The Climate Action Policy Tracker is a working document as many states are continually making progress. Again we invite state policy makers to provide us with any updates on their progress. State Climate Action Plan Matrix
The Climate Policy Program has been attempting to compile a database of legislation, executive orders and statues that states have adopted that relate to greenhouse gas reductions and climate change. We realize that in many states things are changing rapidly and therefore we invite state policy makers to provide us with any additional policies we should add to the database. We are focused on larger initiatives but would welcome information on all that a state is doing that relates to climate change mitigation. The matrix can be downloaded below in both PDF and Microsoft Excel Format.
A note about the matrix: Initiatives that are blocked out in red denote recent actions (i.e. those done in 2008). Sources for the data include the U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy website (http://www.eere.energy.gov/); The Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency website (http://www.dsireusa.org/), state climate and energy policy websites and one-on-one communications with state climate and energy contacts.
