Washington, DC - Sascha Meinrath, director of the New America Foundation’s Open Technology Institute (OTI), has been elected to Ashoka’s global fellowship of leading social entrepreneurs — a network spanning more than 60 countries. Meinrath was recognized for his role as a "community Internet pioneer” and a leading voice for Internet freedom in the United States and around the globe.
Meinrath launched New America's OTI in 2008 to promote affordable, universal, ubiquitous, and open communications networks through partnerships with communities, researchers, industry, and public interest groups. Since that time, OTI has become the preeminent organization for promoting open and transparent broadband measurement with flagship projects including the MeasurementLab.net broadband research platform, and the Commotion Wireless Project (a.k.a., Internet-in-a-Suitcase), a secure, mesh wireless communications infrastructure.
“It is a great honor and privilege to be elected as an Ashoka Fellow,” Meinrath said. “I am humbled to be apart of this dynamic global network and its multifaceted commitment to facilitate human rights through a diverse array of innovative solutions.”
As a global organization, Ashoka supports those who share qualities traditionally associated with leading business entrepreneurs – vision, innovation, determination, and long-term commitment – but are committed to systemic social change in their fields. Ashoka Fellows are recognized for their innovative solutions to some of society’s most pressing social problems.
Ashoka Fellows work in every area of human need, including learning/youth development, the environment, health, human rights, economic development and civic participation. Selection criteria include the social impact of the idea, demonstrated creativity in problem solving, the newness of the idea, and the entrepreneurial quality of the founder.
