Asset Building Program on Richard Cordray: Vigilant Consumer Protector & Tireless Advocate for Fair Play

Published:   July 18, 2011

New America Foundation's Asset Building Program today commended President Obama’s choice for the first director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, former Ohio Attorney General and current CFPB Director of Enforcement, Richard Cordray.

David Rothstein, a research fellow in the Asset Building Program who has worked with Cordray in Ohio, said: “Richard Cordray is an excellent choice to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. I’ve seen his work first-hand. As Treasurer and Attorney General in Ohio, Cordray was a strong negotiator and a tireless advocate for fair play, the middle class, and a healthy financial services market. He has the right demeanor, experience and focus to help make sure that Americans are getting a fair shake.”

Reid Cramer, director of the Asset Building Program, added: “We’ve emphasized all along that there were a number of excellent choices available to run the CFPB and Richard Cordray is just that.He has an impressive record looking out for consumers and financial institutions ready to compete in a fair marketplace. The CFPB needs a strong director in place so that it can continue doing the hard work of creating a level playing field for American consumers. Healthy consumers and healthy markets go hand in hand, and we need the CFPB to be on the job helping to create the conditions for long-term economic success.”
