The New America Foundation's Counterterrorism Strategy Initiative today announced the launch of "FATA: Inside Pakistan's Tribal Regions," a new online resource that explores the dynamics driving public opinion and insurgency in Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

Anchored by the New America Foundation's Drone Database, the leading open-source of information and statistics about U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan, this new site provides researchers with the ability to examine the relationship between drone strikes and public opinion in the FATA, as detailed in agency-by-agency polling being released here for the first time.
Thanks to cutting-edge mapping and data-visualization tools created by Development Seed, interested users can drill down to the agency level, examine recent attitudinal data, and access New America's agency-by-agency reporting on the trends and drivers of the Pashtun insurgency.
"For anyone interested in getting a better understanding of the FATA as a whole, we think this provides one-stop shopping," said Peter Bergen, director of the Counterterrorism Strategy Initiative.
FATA: Inside Pakistan's Tribal Regions features new analysis that examines the correlation between drone strikes in the FATA's various agencies, and public attitudes in each agency regarding said attacks. A key finding is that in North Waziristan, the FATA agency in which drone strikes are the most frequent, the drone program has the least public support.
Visitors to the site can also dig into the New America Foundation's recent poll results in the FATA, examining attitudes on a range of issues from education to economics to security -- and filter those results by gender, age, agency and a range of other demographics.
"One of the most surprising results of the survey," said Patrick Doherty, senior adviser to the Counterterrorism Strategy Initiative, "is the strong support for both boys' and girls' education -- over 90 percent of respondents want improved opportunities for all children." And in a region in which only 20 percent of poll respondents indicated that they had full-time work, the poll generally found that development, not security, is the leading concern of the population.
