New Cuba Policy

April 13, 2009

Washington, DC -- President Barack Obama announced changes in policies towards Cuba today, including easing travel restrictions for family members, remittances and gifts to Cuba, and also looking to open up telecommunications with the country.

The move, seen as controversial by some, comes as the president prepares to head to the Fifth Summit of the Americas in Trinidad later this week where relations with Cuba are likely to be on the agenda.

The following New America Foundation experts on Cuba are available to discuss the policy changes:

  • Steve Clemons, Director of New America Foundation's American Strategy Program and Publisher of The Washington Note
  • Patrick Doherty, Deputy Director of New America Foundation's American Strategy Program

We are also hosting an event on U.S./Cuba relations on Tuesday, April 14, 2009. Click here for more details and to RSVP.
