2009 Education Appropriations Guide

Published:   March 13, 2009

Washington, DC -- Today the New America Foundation's Federal Education Budget Project (FEBP) released an issue brief on the complicated education budget appropriations process for fiscal year 2009.  The paper, "2009 Education Appropriations Guide," by Education Program Research Director Jason Delisle, breaks down the education funding picture for fiscal year 2009, including economic stimulus dollars, omnibus appropriations, and various stop-gap funding measures.

"Making sense of the federal education budget and the appropriations process can be a frustrating task for education advocates, state and local policymakers, the media, and the public," Delisle said. "The now concluded fiscal year 2009 appropriations process is no exception due to numerous stop-gap funding measures and emergency stimulus legislation."

The paper includes an overview of the appropriations process, a 2009 appropriations timeline, highlights of the 2009 appropriations for certain programs, and a table comparing 2008 and 2009 appropriations, including 2009 economic stimulus funding.
