CRFB Praises SAFE Commission Act

September 26, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget applauded the effort by Congressmen Wolf (R-VA) and Cooper (D-TN) to form a commission to reform tax and entitlement policies.

“The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget supports efforts to deal responsibly with the country’s fiscal challenges, and we particularly support those that rely on bipartisan cooperation, which will ultimately be necessary to make real progress,” said Maya MacGuineas, President of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. “The work of Congressmen Wolf and Cooper to establish this commission should be applauded and we hope other Members will work equally hard on this critical national goal of restoring fiscal balance.”

The commission is designed to examine ways to improve the nation’s fiscal imbalances, low levels of saving, and low levels of knowledge about foreign ownership of U.S. debt, as well as a budget process that deemphasizes the longterm.

“A particularly valuable contribution of this commission’s mission is the emphasis on the long-term,” said MacGuineas. “For too long now, politicians have been focused on the next election instead of the next generation and long-term priorities have been dangerously short-changed.”

The Committee also expressed support for the U.S. Treasury Department’s brief on Social Security, (http://www.ustreas.gov/press/releases/reports/post.pdf), and the forthcoming House companion bill (HR 3655) to the Conrad-Gregg Fiscal Task Force bill, which the Committee has praised. “We are encouraged to see more focus on the critically important issue of fiscal reform," said MacGuineas.
