As Policy Analyst in the Asset Building Program, Rourke O’Brien focuses on initiatives aimed at promoting economic self-sufficiency for low- and moderate-income families. He also manages AssetBuilding.org, the program’s web-based clearinghouse on asset ownership.
Prior to joining New America, Mr. O’Brien conducted research with a professor at the Kennedy School of Government on asset limits’ impact on the savings behavior of welfare recipients. He also served as a policy intern at the Social Policy Action Network, where he first became interested in asset building as an anti-poverty strategy, and volunteers with the Maryland Leadership Workshops, providing leadership training for high school students. Mr. O’Brien holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies from Harvard University. His writing has appeared in The Washington Post.
