The Right Way to Reform Healthcare

  • By

November 3, 2010 |

By now it is obvious that the Establishment was snookered on Obamacare. The political impact of that miscalculation will be felt today, as voters repudiate the Democrats who supported the legislation. But what will happen next on healthcare? Right now, the Establishment seems clueless, and yet fortunately, insurgent Establishmentarians, led by Maria Shriver and Sandra Day O'Connor, are breaking with elite orthodoxy, offering a better healthcare solution.

October 6, 2009 |

Bobby Jindal, the 38-year-old Indian-American governor of Louisiana, and a rising star in Republican circles, did a brave thing on Monday morning: He took to the op-ed page of The Washington Post to urge his fellow GOPers to "join the battle of ideas" on health care. That is, Republicans should put forward their own health care plan. And to get that process rolling, he put forth ten ideas of his own.

What Obama Doesn't Get About Americans and Health Care, Part 2

  • By

September 28, 2009 |

In the first part of this two-part piece, I noted that the hot issue-within-an-issue for Washington health care wonks is "bending the curve" on health care costs--that is, reducing future increases.

Even Barack Obama is talking the "bend" talk. In an interview with The Washington Post in July, the president used the "b-word" no less than 11 times. In this particular passage, he said that he wants to "bend" the cost curve, not only for government expenditures, but also for private-sector expenditures:

June 19, 2009 |

This week has brought retreat and retrenchment on healthcare. The headline in Politico was, "Health reform hits Senate speed bumps." The Obama Doctrine: Turning Missile Defense into Collective Security

  • By

May 28, 2009 |

President Obama campaigned on the repudiation of Bush-era policies, most notably the neoconservative idea of military pre-emption. The Bush Doctrine--regime change, followed by democratization and reconciliation--is indeed in disarray, but Barack Obama has yet to offer a fully complete alternative.

Seven-and-a-half years after George W. Bush's "axis of evil" speech, two thirds of that axis--Iran and North Korea--are more hostile and dangerous than ever. Iran elected the Israel-hating, saber-rattling Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2005, and North Korea has exploded two atomic bombs.
