Intern, Global Development (Summer 2012)

The New America Foundation’s Global Assets Project, which aims to advance knowledge on savings opportunities for the poorest around the world, seeks an enthusiastic, motivated individual for the summer semester. The intern will play an integral role in the Project by assisting the Global Assets team with the research, writing, and dissemination of work among its wide variety of project areas, such as social protection, savings products for the poor, youth savings in developing countries and other issues associated with addressing poverty through savings and technology.

Interns will have the opportunity to attend events and network with thought-leaders in global development and related fields. Interns are expected to work at least 30 hours a week and will be based out of the New America Foundation office in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in primary and secondary research, including data entry, around a variety of poverty reduction issues, such as microsavings, economic development, ICT4D, youth economic development, etc.
  • Contribute to project-wide communication and dissemination efforts by providing social media support through twitter, blogging, and independent writing; monitoring news and events; editing articles and reports; assisting with website updates, etc.
  • Help with the planning and execution of public and private events around GAP’s work
  • Perform various administrative duties, as needed.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess the following qualifications:

  • Background or demonstrated interest in issues around global development, poverty, public policy, and/or microfinance.
  • Proven research and analytical skills.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Experience using Excel or working with datasets.
  • Knowledge of various social media outlets.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Flexible, self-motivated, and enthusiastic team players.
  • Composure and professional demeanor to interact with all levels of the public policy community.
