Delegation member Patrick C. Doherty, director of the U.S.-Cuba Policy Initiative for the New America Foundation, said the current effort at S&T engagement is only the third since the 1960s. In 1997, while president of AAAS, environmental microbiologist Rita Colwell led a three-person delegation that spent eight days visiting Cuban government agencies, science centers and laboratories.
