Is California Too Big?

A Zócalo/New America Foundation Connecting California Event in partnership with The Bill Lane Center for the American West

If California were a country, it would be the 35th most populous nation in the world; all 34 countries bigger than California have some form of state, regional or provincial government. But California's distinct, state-like regions don't have governments, or representation. That has bred frustration -- and has sparked proposals by various regions and people, many of them in inland California, to break off regions or split the state in two. Is California too big for its own good? California Broadcasters Association President Stan Statham; former state assemblyman Bill Maze; city of Menifee founder and Councilwoman Darcy Kuenzi; and former deputy state treasurer Mark Paul will look at the challenges posed by the state’s size, the difficulty of holding a diverse, distinct group of regions together – and some provocative new ideas for how the state might be split, or how we might bind it together.

Please RSVP on the Zocalo Public Square website.
