Urban Sprawl and Public Health

What Smart Growth Can Do for Health Outcomes
The Smart Strategy Initiative introduces the concept of walkable, sustainable neighborhoods as a means to promote social, environmental, and economic health. Applied on a national level, redeveloping neighborhoods, towns, and cities with smart growth creates jobs and provides a self-sustaining framework for future American communities.

Redefining how Americans live and work is crucial not just for our environmental health but also our economic wealth. Throughout U.S. history, the housing industry has driven economic recovery, creating jobs and prospects for future growth. This Great Recession, however, has seen the collapse of the traditional housing market, but a new focus can redefine and reinvigorate our ailing economy.
