On September 22, 2010, the Counterterrorism Strategy Initiative hosted Carol Dysinger, director of the documentary “Camp Victory, Afghanistan.” After the film, Peter Bergen sat down with the filmmaker and Lieutenant Colonel Woody Woodring of the United States Army to discuss the feature. Often touching and sometimes amusing, “Camp Victory, Afghanistan” focuses on the growing pains of the Afghan national army.
Director Carol Dysinger spoke about her experience witnessing and filming the events. Her encouraging but tentative anecdotes that brought richer context to the documentary. Lieutenant Colonel Woodring offered his insight as a soldier who spent time in Afghanistan training the Afghan army and developing relationships with the public. Together, along with moderator Peter Bergen, the speakers gave the audience a candid view of a key process—building a competent and authentic Afghan security force—that will dictate success in a country that desperately needs peace.
