With unfolding developments pointing toward a possible thaw in U.S.-Cuban relations, the question—whither Cuba after Castro?—has already begun to be mined by journalists and scholars. Award-winning journalist Ann Louise Bardach has been at the forefront of these debates, with unique insight into the politics and culture of Cuba. Bardach recently published the first-ever English edition of
The Prison Letters of Fidel Castro. The work, originally edited by Luis Conte Aguero, is a collection of letters regarded as the single most valuable and revelatory document regarding Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution.
Bardach began her career on assignment with
The New York Times magazine to cover the United Mine Workers coal strike of 1978. She is the author of
Cuba Confidential: Love and Vengeance in Miami and Havana as well as
Cuba: A Travelers Literary Companion. She was a staff writer for
Vanity Fair for ten years and has since written for
The New York Times,
Washington Post and
Los Angeles Times. She has appeared on 60 Minutes, Today, Dateline, CNN, The O’Reilly Factor, Charlie Rose, National Public Radio and PRI's Marketplace.
Join the New America Foundation and distinguished journalist and author Ann Bardach to discuss opportunities for new directions with and inside Cuba, followed by a question and answer session moderated by Steven Clemons. Copies of
The Prison Letters will be available for purchase following the event.
