HEALTH REFORM: Obama to Naysayers -- You're On Notice!
Like one of our favorite late night (comedy) pundits, the President is putting health reform naysayers "on notice."
Obama, at his first press conference since he returned from traveling overseas, said in Politico,
So I just want to put everybody on notice, because there was a lot of chatter during the week that I was gone: We are going to get this done. Inaction is not an option. And for those naysayers and cynics who think that this is not going to happen, don't bet against us.
Other newspapers heard the same message -- the president is serious about, and focused on, health reform. The Hill wrote that Obama may put lawmakers' August recess on hold if they fall too far behind on their health reform legislation deadlines. The president also promised that his choice for Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin, would be an active voice in the health reform debate. And House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that conversations and negotiations can continue, but that they need to get moving with a House bill this week. "It won't be the finished product," Pelosi said. "In order for us to be on schedule, we have to roll out legislation this week."
"Even though we are close, I've got no illusions that it's going to be easy to get over the finish line," Obama told Politico. "There are going to be more debates and more disagreements before all is said and done. But health care reform must be done."
