Flashback: Educational Computer Games of the 1980s

October 20, 2008 - 11:47am

The website Educational Games Research lists the "Top 10 Most Influential Educational Video Games from the 1980s." As a child of the 1980s, with fond memories of playing Number Munchers (#8) and Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego with my sister on our Apple IIe, this list certainly made me nostalgic. What are your favorite educational video games for PK-3 students, from the past or today? (hat tip: Alexander Russo)

early in 1980 s

The Eighties were an exciting time for video games, as graphics and computing power increased to the point where games started to become visually appealing and interactive. Educational games from that decade in particular taught teachers, parents, students, and designers things that are still influencing titles today.

That raises a thought experiment. Do a cost benefit analysis of the convential approaches of curriculum alignment, frequent assessment, online turorials etc. Then compare the cost and benefits of recruiting a small army of people with a talent for video games to teach in schools. Which approach would do a better job of raising reading comprhension?

I've never played on one of those contraptions, but I have faith in the innovation and creativity of young teachers. There is no doubt in my mind that we could take a leap of faith and unleash the dynamism of the 21st century digital world.

You lost a wheel....
