There may be very good policy reasons to allow private student loans to be dischargeable in bankruptcy in some circumstances. That they are "more similar to a car or home loan" isn't one of them.
Have the smart people at the New America Foundation never heard of the concept of collateral?
Finally, why stop at private loans--why not make federal student loans dischargeable?
