I think a gas guzzler tax is a great idea. I'm all for it, but I have a reservation or two. Some people who drive larger vehicles, such as larger trucks and/or vans, have to because their employment requires them to. For instance, to traverse the kind of roads that lead to job sites, loggers have to have four wheel drive, and many of them have full size (1/2 ton or greater) pickups. There's also the construction industry, courier services, etc, that need larger vehicles to best do their jobs. That said, there should be some sort of waiver if a gas guzzling vehicle is purchased for the purposes of employment. A large vehicle for the purposes of only a daily commute or leisure activities, on the other hand, should definitely be subject to tax, and I would also wonder about retirees who make an RV their home - perhaps they should get a discount, or something of that nature. It's not as if we all can really justify getting a Hummer anymore.
