Sensationalism

Thanks to NAF for trying to keep the mainstream media honest. These sensational newspaper articles may scare away prospective students. That was the case a quarter century ago when President Reagan's proposed student aid cuts drove down higher education access even though Congress did not enact many of them. The media coverage back then led many to believe that aid would not be available, significantly undoing a decade of work that was closing postsecondary access gaps. The Washington Post's coverage of March 2nd is particularly questionable because it did not include any notice to readers of its conflict of interest. The Washington Post in February acquired $60 million worth of shares in Corinthian Colleges, the same Corinthian Colleges that are dependent on subprime private loans.
