Voters in Maine Asked to Cut Their Car Tax

September 23, 2009 - 12:02pm

Question 2, an initiative on this November's Maine ballot, proposes to cut the state's excise tax on cars in half. In California, cutting the vehicle license fee blew open a hole in the budget that still hasn't been patched (the poor economy and the Californian tendency to demand high services and low taxes were also big contributors). But Maine seems poised to follow down that path. Via Seacoastonline.

Oh really?

Oh illegal immigration and public employee unions had nothing to do with the budget in California. Why does the car registration in California have to do with general fund items? Just like the gas tax, money that was only intended for transportation items went to the general fund. Once it goes to other general fund items, forget it, it aint going back. California lawmakers saw the vehicle registration fee and gasoline tax as consistent dependent revenue sources since driving is essential. General fund items should come from general fund revenues like sales tax, income tax, or property tax.

Car taxes are so so

Car taxes are so so expensive. Car buyers have become fewer over the last year or so, as available credit for things such as cars and other big ticket items such as boats and houses and so forth has dropped off the face of the earth. Car buyers are faced with a scarcity of credit, but a surplus of vehicles. Coming up with a down payment is one of the harder parts of securing financing, and some people usually trade in as their down payments. Some people are diligent and determined enough to come up with a cash down payment on the loan for their new auto, and some car buyers are using installment loans for just that purpose.
