Could Ballot Initiative Cost Wal-Mart CEO His Job?

May 7, 2009 - 8:03am

Wal-Mart CEO Mike Duke is in a world of trouble because he signed a ballot initiative petition. Specifically, the petition to put on the ballot an Arkansas initiative to ban adoption by gays or other unmarried adults. His signature got noticed after gay rights activists published the full list of signers of the initiative petition at KnowThyNeighbor.org.

The Arkansas measure is easily the most odious of the dozens of anti-gay initiatives to have qualified for the ballot in any state This initiative wasn't about marriage vs. domestic partnerships. This measure leaves kids languishing in foster care, and prohibits adoptions even within families. (The classic case: the kid with a junkie mother can't be adopted by his gay uncle under this measure).  While it may seem far-fetched to some (Arkansas voters approved the measure, after all), I believe this story puts Duke's job in jeopardy. It will make news globally and become an enormous problem for his company until he addresses it. According to this on Huffington Post, he hasn't yet. Duke should apologize quickly and reverse himself. Or look for another job.

Hurray for the CEO!!

Wait a second this initiative passed. Facts, stubborn things. 57% to 43%. So now this guy has to apologize to who? The notion that children should be limited to married couple is evil? I hope someone in California files a similar petition and I would sign and carry it. It makes no sense to put children in families that aren't committed to each other. Wait a second the "junkie" mother gave birth to her son or daughter and it is her child not societies child. As for the CEO he shouldn't have to resign or apologize and understand he did the right thing. I will definitely email mail and thank him.

Sigh..

Spoken like a true bigot. This attitude is the primary reason I will never move back to Arkansas. Whatever happened to kindness as a Christian virtue?

Re: Sigh

So we as Christians have to give up our faith and everything that is our existence. Throw it out the door to appease homosexuals. Give me a break! My salvation is not going to appease homosexuals, rather Christ. Your definition of kindness is based on your beliefs. My definition is based through Christ. The Bible teaches that homosexuality is an abomination then why should I subscribe to allowing homosexuals (un-married couples as well) to adopt children? We have the right to bring our faiths to the ballot box and exercise our beliefs. If following the teachings of Christ is being a bigot, call me a bigot.
