Signature Turn In For Ohio PayDay Loan Referendum

The payday loan industry in Ohio is seeking a referendum on a new law regulating the industry. A key feature of the law is a 28 percent limit on the interest rates they can charge their borrowers. (Under current practice, rates can be as high as 391 percent). The industry turned in referendum signatures Sunday afternoon. If enough prove to be valid (and there appears to be quite a cushion, 421,000 turned in to make a standard of 241,000), the measure will be on the November ballot.

Many payday signatures collected under false pretenses
The payday lobby has succeeded in collected enough signatures to get the referendum on the November ballot. However, the industry lobby engaged in some very underhanded tactics to collect their signatures. Many Ohio voters signed the petitions under false pretenses, often believing they were signing for "lower interest rates."

Let's hope Ohio voters don't buy their lies and deceptions!
VOTE YES ON ISSUE 5 for lower interest rates!
Libel
Your statement is unproven and slanderous. A video Bill Faith of COHHIO paid part of his 15 million donating to SMEAR the industry to make. All of these allegations were investigated--funny enough--not ONE was found on the signatures of the people that stated they were deceived or paid to sign. When Bill was confronted he refused to retract his lie. If you do some research you'll find opponents have paid dearly to try to throw mud on this industry that provides 173 million in salary to 6,000 Employed Ohioans a year.15 dollars charged to pay for 100 is not 391% apr, its 15%. 15 bucks for 100 is nothing compared to a $32 NSF fee for bouncing a 10 dollar check. The Ohio Department of Commerce backs the industry as well as Ohio Grocers Association. Its the governments job to REGULATE the state, not the people. I like having options, its MY business if I choose to use them, not theirs.
On Signatures
I don't know enough to get into the dispute about the ins and outs of the Ohio payday loan industry. But on the question of signature fraud: misleading people -- and claims of lying in signature gathering -- are a part of every initiative campaign in the country. Signature gatherers routinely say something quick and exciting to get people to sign; opponents always claim the gatherers are lying to or misleading the public, and sometimes they are right. It's not good, but it's the way things are. It's up to voters to read what they're signing. There's no defense against voters who sign things they don't read. Signatures
Well-the circulators should go to HOLLYWOOD, because it seems they "deceived" over FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND people into getting their signatures--Ha-Good one DONNIE but you're oh--
whats the word for it.......
Oh yeah-WRONG!!!
Still, not ONE name of any person was found on the petitions that claimed they were deceived, even in the poorly lit, edited, produced, terribly acted and aired video clip COHHIO made to smear Payday Lending--STILL DIDNT WORK BILL! Wow--COHHIO you guys SURE ARE SPENDING A LOT of money to work against the payday loan industry--shouldnt you be spending that on --oh THE HOMELESS? Cheese and Rice People!
The facts are the facts, and Ohioans are financially intelligent enough to know the facts, not just take some dumb ol bully's word for it. Hey Faith-less--go find another non profit organization to pay you 6 figures and take from the poor..You're a real stand up guy man!
Thousands upon thousands of
Thousands upon thousands of voters signed the petitions thinking that they were signing to lower interest rates! That IS a lie, Pensive!
The payday lobby can do nothing but attack COHHIO, an organization dedicated to helping homeless individuals and those taken advantage of by payday lenders. They claim that COHHIO has $15 million, which is utterly false and truly is libel. The payday lobby (Ohioans for Financial Freedom) spent more in two weeks ($2.1 million) on misleading television advertisements than COHHIO's entire annual operating budget.
The CEO of Check in Cash, Allan Jones, on the other hand, has a net worth of more than $500 million made off the backs of poor people across the country. The payday lobby, Pensive included, is simply doing their best to change subject now that they are losing and have been caught misleading the public. Listen to this: http://www.wcpn.org/index.php/WCPN/news/13623/.
I think that says it all right there! Vote yes on issue 5!
Attack?!?
COHHIO, who has NO business other than HOMELESS began the attack on us. Therefore, if they dish it out they should take it. If they had nothing to hide, they wouldnt have their "non profit" advocates like you, vouching for them, holding CULT LIKE rallies, passing out confusing "pledges" pretending to be payday circulators so that they get people to say they WERE deceived.
I have seen the payroll for your company, you STEAL from good hearted donators and pay more than 60 percent to your staff, including 6 figure FAITHLESS.
Who cares if the owner of a "FOR PROFIT" business does well, OSU pays their uppermanagement 300,000 + a year--big deal, who cares? Its when the scum of the earth hides behind the guise of being GOOD, pulls out all the stops to smear an industry that actually helps people in need. Get a grip and get real. Aren't they pulling on your strings to have you dance to another blog soon? Go on little puppet--dance away.
VOTE NO ON ISSUE 5, PRESERVE OPTIONS, CHOICES, FREEDOM.
They were deceptive.
My girlfriend was talked into signing the petition because they told her it was to create new jobs. There are no new jobs in this initiative. Just ripping people off. And by the way it is 390% APR! 15 dollars interest in two weeks is amazing. I can't believe anyone would want to defend those scumbags.
While Ohio Governor Ted
While Ohio Governor Ted Strickland confirmed no sign of fallback on his opposition to the payday loan and cash advance industries, he has found a new friend that he’s fighting on behalf of: the state’s community of gamblers. In effect, as of August 1, 2008, but being contested by the people on the November 4 state ballot, Strickland says this is a valiant effort to raise money for their public schools. Although he has been taking deep criticism from all walks of life, including members of his own parish, Strickland has defended his views on several occasions, claiming that, despite his opposition to the expansion of gaming, this one is best for the common good of our children. Modification of the state constitution to authorize the construction of a $600 million casino near Dayton is part of his proposal. Really think about this idea for just a second. If I’m not mistaken, Governor Strickland is instructing his citizens to take a chance and gamble away whatever's left in their pockets if they are experiencing an unexpected financial sting. Along with that, it is being toted as a good cause for children’s future. When they are short on funds to purchase their children’s clothes and school supplies, Strickland says it is NOT okay to get temporary funds from a payday cash lender to make ends meet.

A measure comes before the
A measure comes before the people of Ohio: HB 545. HB 545 is a measure that will put greater restrictions on payday loans in the state of Ohio. It is being touted as protecting the good citizens of Ohio, but this is far from the case. This measure will benefit no one. Here’s what they’re telling you: that the entire industry participates in predatory lending, and that the interest rates are upwards of 391%. What the opposition of faxless payday loans aren’t telling you is that the APR on overdraft fees can be over 1000%, and overdraft fees make up a significant portion of banks’ incomes. Bear in mind, now, that most payday loans are made and paid back in a two week period. Who does it seem that really wants this measure to pass? It certainly doesn’t seem like an altruistic attempt on the part of the legislature to curb preying on credit consumers. Should HB 545 be passed, over 6,000 people will lose their jobs and over 1,600 stores all over Ohio will close, putting Ohio further over the edge of the ledger in an already troubled state economy. How does that look when you’re trying to attract businesses, Governor Strickland? Perhaps you should take a look at what the people are actually saying. NO on HB 545 makes sense if you want to get Ohio’s economy back on track.

Payday Loan
It's just like any other form of borrowing. If you're irresponsible, you're going to be the one holding the short straw in the end. I've gotten a cash advance before, paid if off on time and no problem.
