Is Bolivia Breaking Up?

June 23, 2008 - 3:25pm

Partial results show a big victory for those supporting "autonomy" for the gas-rich province of Tarija. It's the fourth Bolivian province to vote for autonomy from the central government this year. A recall vote on President Evo Morales is scheduled for August. Morales says that, if he survives the recall, he will push for a new constitution that would put more power in the hands of the central government. Given Bolivia history, it's possible that in that country, these autonomy referenda aer serving as a prelude to civil war.

'Aer' they now???

Any more than the implementation of overt hostilities against Iran would precipitate civil war here? Or perhaps more likely, the declaration of martial law?
Civil war will not happen in Bolivia, at least not any time soon.
If violence does occur--and it very well might--it will be between the established elite and the vast overwhelming majority of non-elite Bolivians, and though it might be bloody, it won't last long. Unless of course, the US persists in covertly fomenting continued divisiveness there, or even worse--but less likely--decides to 'spread democracy' by overtly intervening militarily.
Your 'big victory' claim by/of the autonomous movement, is in large part an artificial divisive construct implemented and financed by our government, which is against a valid truly democratic movement, as led by Evo Morales.
The so-called autonomous movement in Bolivia, is nothing more than an attempt to divide Bolivia on behalf of the same interests which have served to keep Bolivia the most impoverished nation in South America, while the very profitable exploitation of her vast resources continues. Divide and conquer--does it sound familiar?
End of story.
